A Cavaquinho is either a small steel-strung guitar-shaped instrument with 4 strings, or it comes in Banjo form with a resonator. Traditionally, it is tuned 1 octave above the top 4 strings of a G banjo - DGBD. It is quite possible to use alternative tunings, and there are many different tunings used in Brazil - one of the most common is DGBE. This makes the instrument play with the same fingering as the ukulele, but at twice the volume!
